Speed Landscape Drawing and Painting

Speed Landscape Drawing and Painting

Saturday 02 November
Merchant City - 9am - 2 Hours
Jiachen Liu
The focus of this two-hour structured session is "speed" and "form", i.e. capturing the essence of a subject. You will be guided to complete some "warm-up" colour and drawing exercises and prepared for doing ink and watercolour-based painting in the session. You will learn how to quickly sketch and capture multiple subjects in the garden with ink and wash technique. You will be advised to keep things rather loose and time your drawing/painting. You will have a chance to meet and greet like-minded people, choose your own subjects in the garden and be guided to complete the exercises, and artwork and have some takeaway homework with the learned technique. All levels and experiences are welcome.

Street art is a unique and colorful art form and can be found in all kinds of nooks and crannies in cities all over the world. Capturing art in the streets in photographs can be tricky because these urban art pieces are in public spaces, that are busy and usually filled with a decent amount of traffic. Sometimes you include the people and sometimes, you don't.

This idyllic scene is of the coastal town of North Berwick in East Lothian. I drew the outlines with pencil then used acrylic paint for the colours. Finishing off, I worked in the details with pen and ink completing the image. I go for walks and travel a lot which gives me inspiration for these types of paintings. I enjoy illustrating buildings, trees and nature using bright colours as well as moody, earthy colours for the atmosphere.

Oils and acrylics are my usual medium, but I started dabbling in digital art as something to keep me busy whilst relaxing in front of the TV. The scenes are drawn freehand using a photo reference. There's something very satisfying and fascinating about getting the angles right, especially when it comes to tenement buildings. In many respects it's breaking down a picture into a very simple and basic form, but is in fact incredibly time consuming, with this small piece taking over 23 hrs to com

Title or Location: Blue bottles
A small gallery and antiques shop owner, Ronald Harte, in Deer Isle, Maine saw a still life of with an interesting blue bottle that I use all the time, and wanted to buy it (not the one in the piece). It sold before he got to it. Over the summer he mentioned it and wondered if I could do a little series. Of course I said yes and started searching for blue bottles everywhere. The dark cobalt is a Vicks jar. The small one in the back looks like a medicine bottle. I saw the swirly one at my wife?s

Title or Location: Village Life
The artwork oil on panel size 12" x 9" was created in 2021. The scene is of my home village of Romiley and the popular coffee shop of ?No 29? where a print of the original hangs. The home of the original itself is just around the corner. The biggest challenge for me was to portray chrome chairs on the street. But it was a delight painting strong light and shade, something the villagers don't see enough.
